The Grand Shrine of Ise is held to be Japan’s most important Shinto sanctuary. Its imposing layout comprising principal and auxiliary shrines is visited by approximately eight million people annually. Shrine rebuilding accompanied by rituals has taken place every 20 years for almost 1300 years. Japanese photographer Sanjiro Minamikawa (*1945) documented the 62nd shrine relocation in impressive photographs in 2013 and published his photos on traditional washi (Japan) paper.
