They embody the dream of grace and immaculate beauty – these little plastic beings which are the object of young girls’ care, and these bigger ones which draw the gazes of older gentlemen in the window display. Enchantment like this cannot last. The dolls shown here, grubby and mutilated, were cast out long ago. They are put on sale and exposed at some second-hand market or other. Or they land in the refuse, sinking in the filth. Dream turns into nightmare.
