A challenge is set to the notion of the forest as an idyll. Lonely, aged and broken, these trees and forests seem to us to be almost alien lifeforms. They have something inherently morbid, mysterious; sometimes, they carry merely an allusion to their story. Thus, they impressively bring home to the beholder that forests are more than the sum of their trees.
